Mobile Phone Review - Nokia N73

One product that this blog will not review a great deal of is mobile phones, but lets give it a go anyway. The phone we are going to look at is a popular selection from the Nokia N Series, the N73. I have had a N73 for just over 18 months and in that time have had my ups and downs with the handset. This review will concentrate on the functionality of the phone and will not comment on the reception due to the difference of experience between providers.
I remember when I first got the phone that I was excited as it was the first phone that I had bought that had the capabilities of emailing. This however proved to be more difficult that first anticipated and led to that function not being used at all. The email did not even get set up. I also remember a great increase in satisfaction from using the camera function which has a number of different settings. Toggling between with and without flash could be tricky but the options made it feel more like you were using a digital camera, which I liked. There were some delays when trying to take a quick pictures, for example, when you start up the camera a message pops up on screen that you have to cancel before you take a picture. This also happens after you have taken a picture, you have to save or delete the image before you can take another. That said the quality of the images is fairly good and the camera also comes with video capabilities.
The standard functions on the phone - phone book, text messaging and calling all worked well and the phone has a lot of extras including a “blog” function that kept track of images and text messages on certain dates to make it easy to look back over what you had been saying and taking snaps of. This along with the games made the phone seem in a class of its own. A free demo of the tomb raider game was included on the phone which contained very good graphics for a mobile phone game.
These functions along with many many others were however over shadowed by the slowness of the phone after it had got a bit of data on it. A few text messages and photos led to a agonising 3-5 second wait while unlocking the phone and a delayed lag between menu’s.
Overall I would class the phone as OK, sort of a 2.5 out of 5 (nearer the 2 than the 3). A phone which could deal with a bit more data on board and still operate at full speed at the cost of a few of the extras would have been a much wiser decision in my eyes.
Have you had similar or completely different experiences with a phone?

Nice review - I made the move over to Sony a few years back and I haven’t looked back as I just felt Nokia had lost it’s spot as being the top manufacturer.
I have just been convinced to try the New Nokia E71 with the full qwerty keyboard - because of email. I like it so far and the keybaord is actually usable for such small keys. I just wish I could stay with Sony now.

The E71 does look nice but as I mentioned on another comment I’ve been lucky enough to get to try out the iPhone and don’t think i’ll be trying anything else for some time.
How is the speed between menu’s on the E71? Does this slow down if you have 10-20 photos saved?

Full qwerty keyboard is something I need to have. Nokia is a lot better quality than iPhone.

From personal experience I disagree Jane. Why do you say that the Nokia is better quality? Do you feel nokia in general or just one particular phone.
The iPhone comes with full qwerty keyboard its just touch screen.

Hmm.. I have a different opinion, but great review nonetheless. My N73 is just 2 weeks old, and I have to say so far I’m happy with it. Oh and it’s the Music Edition BTW. The image quality is great as you said and I never had any problem operating the camera. The only thing that irks me is it is indeed slow at loading certain stuff, the “New Message” in particular. But overall I would give it a 4.
